What Are You Afraid Of?

In Ephesians 6:10-18 we are instructed to put on the full armor of God, the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, shoes to stand firm, the shield of faith, the helmet of God's saving power and the sword of the word of God.

Hmmm, nowhere in that passage does it suggest that we put on any sort of armor to protect our backside as we turn and flee in fearful retreat.

Follow along as I make my way through scripture to identify those passages that direct us to not be afraid, to not worry or be anxious... to be strong & courageous, to have faith and trust in God.

Matthew 08:25-27

The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!" He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!"

Matthew 08:25-27 (TNIV)

Comment: Christ answers the prayers of those that call Him Lord. He is able to calm our fear and strengthen our faith in the most turbulent circumstance.

Matthew 06:31-33

Don't worry and say, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear?' The people who don't know God keep trying to get these things, and your Father in heaven knows you need them.  Seek first God's kingdom and what God wants. Then all your other needs will be met as well.

Matthew 06:31-33 (NIRV)

Comment: Our Father knows our needs and is able to supply all, so trust in His wisdom and power to provide, and leave it to the unbeliever to be anxious about worldy things, for they do not know God.

Matthew 06:28-30

Why worry about clothes? Look how the wild flowers grow. They don't work hard to make their clothes. But I tell you that Solomon with all his wealth wasn't as well clothed as one of them. God gives such beauty to everything that grows in the fields, even though it is here today and thrown into a fire tomorrow. He will surely do even more for you! Why do you have such little faith?

Matthew 06:28-30 (CEV)

Comment: Cast your cares on God, trust in Him who is able to provide for all things, for things of this world fade and wither away.

Matthew 06:27

And who of you by worrying and being anxious can add one unit of measure (cubit) to his stature or to the span of his life?

Matthew 06:27 (AMP)

Comment: God made us as He designed, do not be anxious about life, but be content and trust in Him to provide for our needs.

Matthew 06:25-26

Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

Matthew 06:25-26 (ESV)

Comment: God is able to provide all that we are in need of and guard against evil. If we choose to trust in Him instead of worrying about things of the world it is better for our souls.

Genesis 35:17

Posted on May 14, 2010

And when her labor was at its hardest, the midwife said to her, "Do not fear, for you have another son."

Genesis 35:17 (ESV)

Comment: Though pain and sorrows exist, we can endure knowing that a reward awaits us. As children of God we take comfort in being absolved with eternal salvation and look forward to what lay ahead without fear.

Matthew 28:10

Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me."

Matthew 28:10 (NIV)

Comment: Christ is risen, He is with us. His resurrection silences fear and fills us with hope and joy. Now go out and proclaim it!
